Week 1

Welcome to Week 1 of Distance Learning

Here are your tasks for the week.  Please feel free to take pictures of work that you are proud of and post them onto your blog or email them to your classroom teacher at jamie@elmpark.school.nz. 

Science in a Van on YouTube also does live experiments at 12:45pm everyday so head over there to check these out! 

MONDAY

Reading:  

1) Choose 2 stories to read on Sunshine online, Literacy planet or from your library shelf at home.

2) Read 1 to yourself and one to somebody else in your home.

3) Choose your favourite story and draw a picture of the best part from the book.  

4) Write a few sentences explaining why this was your favourite part.  This was my favourite part because...

Writing: 

Add the full stops and capital letters in the correct places for these incorrect sentences.  You can type them or write them down. 

Maths: 

1) Count forwards in your 2s all the way to 40. 

2) Draw a picture of what it might look like, by drawing something in pairs. Look at the picture below as an example.

3) Go onto this basic facts website for 10 minutes:  https://www.factmonster.com/math/flashcards.

4) Choose Addition, Subtraction or Addition and Subtraction, and level 1 or 2. See how many questions you can answer in 2 minutes. 
Please note: After a trial the website may ask you to pay, please do not. If you would like your child to do extra activities, I have set some tasks on Matific.

Phonics: 

1) Find and write down 5 objects in the house that have the ck digraph in it.

2) Find and write down 5 objects in the house that have an h digraph (sh, wh, th, ph, ch).

TUESDAY

Reading:  

1) Go to Literacy Planet and complete the tasks and quizzes that have been assigned to you.

2) Go to the Library in Literacy Planet go into Stories and listen to a story of your choice.

If you don’t have access to a device or if you want some extra tasks here is an activity you can do: 

2) Choose a story from the Library on Literacy Planet and listen to some reading.

Writing:

Imagine that you’re an astronaut and you’ve crash-landed on a strange planet! You came across some interesting aliens, and one decides to follow you back to Earth.  Here is his picture, now imagine that you’re introducing him to your family and describe him in 5 or more sentences. Email Miss Kim your writing if you’re proud of your work!

Maths:

Solve these problems. Remember to look at the hundreds board at the back of your homework if you need help.

1. Count backwards from 50 to 40.
2. Count forward in 2s up to 20.
3. 50 - 6 =
4. 38 + 5 =
5. 43 - 4 =
6. 22 + 7 =
7. 30 - 8 =

Solve these problems, and remember to use your basic facts:  e.g. 50 + 40 = 90 because 5 + 4 = 9

1. Count backwards from 100 to 80.
2. Count forwards in 5s up to 100.
3. 60 + 20 =
4. 100 - 30 =
5. 40 + 40 =
6. 90 - 50 =
7. 80 - 70 =

Phonics:

Here are some words with the digraph LL and SS.  Write 3 silly sentences using some of these words.

Go for a scavenger hunt inside and outside your house.  

Find an object that begins with:

1. The SH sound.
2. The TH sound.
3. The CH sound.
4. The L sound.
5. The V sound.

Responsibility: What have you helped mum or dad around the house with today?  Take a picture of you being helpful and send it to Miss Kim. 

WEDNESDAY

Reading:  

1) Read the poem aloud and find the words that have a LONG A sound.

2) Make some actions to go along with your poem.  See if you can recite it without looking at the words! 

3) Record a video of you reading and performing the poem and upload it onto your blog, or send it to Miss Kim.

Writing:

How could you pull the best April Fool’s joke in the world?  Think up the world’s best April Fool’s joke and write a set of instructions about how to pull it off.

Remember, a good set of instructions uses sequencing words like the ones given below: 

Maths:

Go on a Geometry Scavenger Hunt and take pictures of what you find.

Values:

Resilience: What have you tried your best to do today?  It can be anything - from trying not to fight with your brother or sister, to making sure you finish all the tasks mum and dad said you needed to do. 


Do you play any games at home with your family? Take a picture of the game and send it to Miss Kim explaining why it's your favourite game!

THURSDAY

Reading:

1) Choose 2 stories to read on Sunshine online, Sunshine Classic, Literacy planet or from your library shelf at home.

2) Draw 3 pictures retelling the beginning, middle and ending of one of the stories.

4) Write a few sentences for each picture explaining what happened.

Writing

Roll a dice to choose some characters and a setting from the pictures below, and write your own narrative story.  Remember a good fiction story has a problem and a solution as well.

Extra: You can take a picture, or type or record yourself reading your own story and send it to Miss Kim.

Maths:

A double is a number that you add to itself.  For example: 3 + 3 is double 3, which is 6; 4 + 4 is double 4 which is 8. 

Draw the dominoes below and find the double.

2) Ask someone in your family to tell you a number, and see if you can tell them what the number before and after is.  Here is a hundreds board to help you.

Respect: What is one thing you appreciate your parents or brothers and sisters doing for you?  Share this with them. 

FRIDAY

Reading

1. Go onto Sunshine Classics (not Sunshine Online) and complete the tasks which have been set for you.

Writing

Write a letter or an email to someone about how your week has gone.  Include this information:

1. What has been your favourite part of this week and why? 
2. What have you not liked about this week and why? 
3. Which activity did you like the best out of your online learning this week? What was it your favourite?
4. Which did you find the most challenging, and why?

If you look in your Gmail inbox on Friday using your Elm Park account, you might see an email from Miss Kim about how her week has been! 

Maths

Carry out a statistical investigation in your home.  Find out how many of these objects you have in your house, and then record the amount using tally marks.

Values:
Respect: Make a poster, or write a letter to an essential service provider thanking them for working during this time.  Essential service providers are people who have to work during the lockdown because we need them!  Research and find out who are some essential service providers.  Take a picture of your poster or letter and email it to Miss Kim if you're proud of your work.
